Phil Spencer says Microsoft with Studio

The head of the Xbox sends some mixed messages about the purchase of studios.

X019 has come and gone, and it is up to you whether Microsoft has done enough to achieve a significant impact. What we have seen were different game announcements and many news in terms of Game Pass and Xcloud. We also saw new material from many new studios that Microsoft has bought in recent years. While the company currently seems to be solving it, they apparently do not finish to buy developers yet.

In a detailed interview with Eurogamer, Xbox boss Phil Spencer talked about the purchase of studios. When asked if they are finished after the 15 studios under the banner of Xbox Games, he gives away a pretty enthusiastic no and says they had to fill some gaps, especially on the Asian market.

I think we can sometimes be stunned a bit when we bring a few studio logos to a slide, and that will be the news. You are no trading cards. These are studios. And we want you to build great games. I love the fact that we announce three new IPs here, two from our internal studios. I'm looking forward to there that there is no show in which I can imagine where we will not announce new games just because we have so many studios. It is not really a PR struggle about how many new acquisitions we can bring on stage. Because if we do not build great games, the acquisitions do not matter.

But are we done? I do not believe that.

While it is not necessarily a contradiction, but it is interesting that these comments come at a time when the head of Xbox Game Studios, Matt Booty, mentioned that Microsoft will make the focus of the purchase of studios for the time being. It could be easy that Spencer thinks in the longer term in contrast to Booty, as the company will undoubtedly add more studios with the change in the industry over the next few years.
